David O'Connor has textured soul. Like a fine wine, he has depth that delights the senses. His classical nylon-string guitar speaks through him to create a classy atmosphere, indoors or out, from the most casual to the most elegant affair. That is why he is considered a top wedding and event guitarist on the central California coast.
David has a vast and varied musical background. His career began in Malaga, Spain where he studied Flamenco and classical guitar with a professor from the Conservatory of Music. He has since played with numerous bands and has toured overseas and nationwide with such notables as The Lettermen and Leonard Cohen (Cohen was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010).
David’s eclectic history blends every genre of music, from jazz, classical, pop & blues to Latin and salsa big bands. He composes music as well, but no matter the style, David’s sound is full, rich and memorable.
David has played hundreds of weddings, corporate events, receptions, parties, dinners, and every sort of special occasion imaginable. From his central coast home base he travels throughout the San Francisco Bay area, to the Napa wine country, and south to the Monterey Bay and Big Sur.
Currently, David focuses mostly on his solo work and compositions. His CDs are collections of acoustic solo material featuring recognizable as well as original songs. He also is enjoying teaching beginner to advanced guitar students.
After playing hundreds of weddings, David is well versed in traditional wedding music, as well as what it takes to provide a custom and unique musical experience that will be remembered. Brides and grooms often choose David’s original songs for their processionals and recessionals, while others prefer cover songs that carry a special meaning. Whatever you desire for your wedding, David’s contribution always adds a rich and warm atmosphere for your ceremony, cocktail hours, and rehearsal dinners.
David teaches all styles of music, from beginner to advanced, throughout the Silicon Valley and the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay areas. His rates are reasonable and he travels to your home to teach. Please contact him for further information and availability.
"Dave has been teaching my three boys to play guitar for almost 10 years now. He started teaching them around 5th or 6th grade by coming once a week and continued all through high school and beyond. The two older boys are in college now but Dave still remains in touch with them. The third boy is a freshman in high school and still taking weekly lessons. Dave is an excellent teacher who knows his craft very well. He never gets flustered with his students, and uses positive reinforcement in his teaching style. He is also very good at tailoring the lessons and the pace to the individual student. This is very important because every child is different. Dave always shows up on time, is flexible with his scheduling, and charges a reasonable fee. My kids really like Dave as a person and a teacher and after observing Dave for so many years, I myself have started to take guitar lessons…. and I’m in my 50s. Let’s just say Dave has been very patient with me as a student and that is much appreciated. I would recommend Dave to anyone." –Robert from Saratoga, CA
David loves to celebrate with people. Any type of party, anywhere—indoors, outdoors, beaches, backyards, big, small—his music adds the atmosphere that keeps things lively and fun. He also enjoys those more subdued occasions—dinners, intimate gatherings—because he knows the ambience of his guitar in the background provides just the right mood and tone. In the business world, David has played numerous corporate events over the years and finds great satisfaction in adding his touch to the company agenda and activities.
David did a fantastic job playing at my Lions Club Fundraiser. He arrived early, was very flexible about the set up, was friendly and professional and played beautifully. When half of our attendees left the room for a tour of the museum David took a break and then offered to resume playing when they came back. He played longer than he needed to, which was awesome! We will definitely hire him again. –Anne Peterson, San Jose, CA

David was fantastic!!! … He did a beautiful job. I love the Spanish guitar and it was a dream come true to hear him playing as I made my grand entrance. Everyone enjoyed his music. All in all, we were thrilled to have David at our special day. Thank you for making it even more memorable. –Chris and Diane Wakefield, Brentwood, CA
Many of my guests commented and complemented Dave's music at my wedding ceremony. I was very pleased and would highly recommend Dave. –Priscilla Gembe, Carmel, CA
David was a true professional. He engaged in full communication regarding the event, and came early to rehearse with vocalist. Dave's music was perfect for our chapel wedding. We thank him for a job well done and do highly recommend. –Carol Y, Pleasanton, CA
David was a real professional. He arrived early, was accommodating, very conscious about breaks and best of all extremely talented. I can’t say enough good things about him. To sum up his credibility, when I accidentally overpaid him he called the next day and explained why he was sending me a check back for the difference. I wish all the folks I have hired over the years were as honest and hard working. I will hire him again. –Tom Bolich, Oakland, CA
We hired David for a funeral service & were extremely pleased. He responded in a very timely way to a number of emails we sent during the week. I was impressed about his sensitivity to the difficult time our family was going through, and actually hired him over the other two musicians I had contacted because of his initial response back to us. We were not real sure what we wanted him to play but... his style was perfect—beautiful and uplifting. He made excellent selections and is an amazing musician. I have already recommended him to friends and will do so in the future. –Laurie Emery, San Jose, CA
As a professional musician myself, I found David very easy to work with. I played sax (alto, tenor), clarinet and flute, unrehearsed, but you'd think we had been performing together for years. We got along really well and had fun playing together. My only regret is that we didn't have more time to play. I would like to play with him again if an opportunity presents itself. Thanks. –Kevin Deibert, Freedom, CA
